MCT stands for medium chain triglyceride. They are purely saturated, medium length fatty acid. They, however, contain the unique property that enables them to be quickly converted to energy or ketones in the body. Normally fat must be broken down, combined with a protein, shuttled through the lymph system to the liver, broken down further into free fatty acids, which are then either stored as body fat or converted to glucose and used as fuel. MCT can however, enter the blood stream directly and, as stated, used immediately for energy, very similar to normal carbohydrate. MCT may be beneficial for high endurance athletes.
